Cake Pops!

As it appears that in Surrey there is nothing really to do but cook, I decided to help my sister, Georgia, make some Cake Pops.

What are Cake Pops?

They're the new craze in the baking world, and I can definitely see why. They are basically minature balls of cake on a lolly pop stick, coated in pretty much whatever you want and they are amazing!

My sister is currently studying for her A levels, and like many has spent the majority of her Easter break and study leave far more interested in everything but her revision.
This procrastination resulted in her purchasing a 'Cake Pop' machine, which is pretty much a glorified waffle maker, apart from the fact it produces ball shaped cakes and is really quite exciting.
They're not very expensive and she purchased hers from  Lakeland and it is definitely worth every penny.

The tutorial on the website makes it look a lot easier than it is, and despite thinking we are as talented as Michelin starred chefs, it was actually very tricky and messy, but so much fun at the same time.
The recipe is pretty simple and the recipe book that comes with the Cake Pop maker, provides a list of different types of sponge that you can make, we decided to go with vanilla.

Ingredients;
- 125g softened butter
- 125g caster sugar
- 2 medium eggs
- 2 tsp medium eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 125g self raising flour
- 2 tsp of milk

(Plus any ingredients you wish for topping, we used 2 bars Cadbury's Dairy Milk, Sprinkles and Magic Stars)

What you have to do,
1. Beat together the butter and sugar
2. Add one egg at a time and beat until fully mixed
3. Add the vanilla extract and mix to combine
4. Sift the flour into the mixture and add the milk, then beat until smooth

Now it gets a little bit tricky, you basically have to fill each hole with a very generously heaped teaspoon, and then close the lid and let them cook for 4 minutes.

When they look like cakes take them out, let them cool a little and then using the lolly pop sticks you dip the ends in melted chocolate before sticking them about half way into the cake, then leave in the fridge until the chocolate has hardened again before decorating.

We then coated the cake pops in the melted Cadbury chocolate, put in the fridge to harden a little before decorating, and then placed back in the fridge with the Magic Stars and sprinkles on until the chocolate had fully set.

This all sounds quite simple but on first attempt is actually really tricky, definitely worth all the effort for the end result though - delicious!
